Community Wings is a non-profit organization based in San Diego, California and founded by a small group of friends and local educators. The idea for Community Wings resulted from an over-dinner conversation about state cut backs and the lack of artistic and community based opportunities for children these days. The conversation was loaded with complexities, as you can imagine, and went late into the night. In the end, it was clear that we all feel a kinship and responsibility to our communities that extends beyond our paychecks.
The mission of Community Wings is to empower communities through art, education and life skills.
The mission statement will be fulfilled on a project by project basis as we work side by side with business owners, schools, neighborhood associations and local organizations.
The first project we are working on is to team up with a local business owner that offers public space that is a current eyesore for the neighborhood (for example: a wall that may be subject to repeated graffiti or deterioration). With a group of volunteer students (that we will train) we will reshape the space into a community asset.
The founders of Community Wings believe that people working together to beautify their shared space invigorate a positive impact on the social climate of the community.
