Ghana with Linda

I love going on home visits in the villages. This trip to Ghana, we identified some new scholarship recipients. One, Rebecca Azure lives with her disabled, widowed mother and four siblings.

An elder sister stopped schooling when their father died, for lack of funds and does Kayayo work in the Bolgatanga market. She carries loads for shoppers in the market for whatever they tip her. Last month, she gave one of the village women 10 cedis (about $2.50) to send back to the village for Rebecca’s schooling.
Another elder sister is attending high school in exchange for living with a man who offered to sponsor her schooling. She has given birth to his child.
Rebecca’s mother weaves baskets to feed the family since she can no longer farm. This brings in a minimal income.

Rebecca is the only one in her family attending church, where she is active in youth choir. This Fall Rebecca begins her last year of Jr. High, which determines whether she can continue on to high school. A scholarship could mean the difference between Rebecca dropping out of school or completing her education.

Sponsoring Rebecca for one year including feeding assistance is $135.00. This provides uniforms, shoes, Ghana health insurance, school supplies and fees, clothing and hygiene allowance.
